Concussion Management

Concussion has become a hot topic in healthcare. In the United States, approximately 3.8 million concussions occur in competitive sports and recreational activities annually. It is estimated that up to 50% of concussions go unreported.

A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury with a complex pathophysiological process that results from trauma to the head. Serious long-term damage to the brain may occur if a concussion is not managed properly. The most important step to concussion management is recognition that you have a concussion. Concussion symptoms vary depending on the individual and the injury. Common symptoms reported by patients with concussions include the following:

  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Feeling slowed down
  • Mentally “foggy”
  • Sensitivity to light and/or noise
  • Balance problems
  • Fatigue
  • Drowsiness
  • Visual disturbances
  • Anxiety and nervousness
  • Neck and back pain
